Some people will not be pleased with this site. About this I am quite sure. The idea of living a good life does not mean pie-in-the-sky optimism about having a perfect, trouble free existence. It means learning to be as inwardly peaceful as possible in all circumstances. This is actually quite challenging. The fact is that circumstances are not completely under our control so if we really want to live in serenity, we must be serious about it and decide to constantly work towards it.
I know there are many people who want to believe in magical thinking. In essence, this is the idea that one’s mind creates one’s situation. Who has not heard or read about the “law of attraction” and the idea that one can “manifest desires”? In the extreme version, it is held that one’s mind creates reality itself.
We will not be engaging this concept here as it has nothing to do with a tranquil mind. In fact it promotes the exact opposite state of mind. This is because it inevitably includes the notion that one is responsible for every aspect of one’s life; every circumstance, every situation, every relationship, every success, failure, argument, hurt feeling, job, spouse, health…….the list is endless. In other words, when things go wrong, it is your fault! This added layer of guilt is obviously not helpful or necessary. It is especially troubling if the concept is incorrect.
Let me state it bluntly. Because it is antithetical to the development of inner peace, I am not interested in the law of attraction. I worked with it at one time in my life and really wanted it to be true. But over time, there were enough counter-examples to give me pause and consider whether in fact this idea might not be true. It taught me to look deeper into what was motivating this desire and what might be behind it.
In a way I am grateful for my errors. They kept me looking inward and learning more about how to live well and understand what really mattered. If you are also sensing some disillusion about some of the things you have taken to be true and are now wondering which way to turn, take heart. The inner drive towards living well is clearly alive in you or you would not feel this way. You are probably serious about this quest or you would not feel both the disappointment in things thus far, along with the urge to keep going.
So keep reading, remain hopeful, and stay serious about your inner life.
