I don’t write about current events or political controversies, nor promote a particular viewpoint beyond the idea of ‘live and let live’ as much as possible. But the social and political environment I see these days has enough destructive potential that I thought it worthwhile posting something that might offer an alternative view.
Is it inevitable that deeply entrenched opinions be unchangeable? Are we so boxed into our thinking that we must defend against ‘the other’ without any thought of how far conflicts can actually go? And once deeply into conflict, is it impossible to put aside our views in the quest for a more peaceful existence? I think the answer to these questions is ‘no’ and as evidence I offer the story below.
This is such a wonderful story. It’s a true event that happened at Christmas in 1914, on a battlefield in World War 1. These two videos are best watched back to back. The first presents a fictionalized version of the event, and the second one tells the background of the story.
The celebration of humanity in the midst of the worst situation is an inspiration to anyone who values real peace. It starts quietly within and then is expressed without. That this unfolds with the stirring phrases of “Silent Night” is a testament to all that is good and possible in us.
Watch this amazing and true story.
